| China tour leaves
lasting impression on residents Local travelers returned
from the Porterville Chamber of Commerce's business tour of China
with a new appreciation for our neighbors east of the Pacific.
Tourist Jim Murrell said despite a 24-hour flight delay that nearly
put a stop to the trip, the experience was well worth the wait.
"It was unbelievable," Murrell said Thursday after returning
to Porterville.
A group of 140 local residents and members of the business community
signed up for an eight-day tour of some of China's most revered
attractions.
The morning of Nov. 10, members of the Porterville tour group stepped
off of the plane in Beijing. Twenty-four hours earlier they were
stranded at the Los Angeles International Airport.
Mechanical issues with China Easter Airlines Flight 586 delayed
the trip for about a day.
"We had to spend the night in L.A. but they went ahead and
made up for," Murrell said. "We had some long days, but
we saw everything on the itinerary."
The tour included the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou
and such historic sites as the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, the
Ming Tombs, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.
"I was really impressed by the Forbidden City," Murrell
said.
The Forbidden City is found at the center of Beijing and was the
imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Surrounded by
a deep moat and high walls are 9,999 buildings.
Analuara Mechem and her husband said they were more than satisfied
with the trip.
"I was amazed by how old everything was," Mechem said.
"They have 6,000 years of recorded history."
Mechem said she was most awestruck by the Terra-cotta Warriors.
"There is over 7,000 warriors and they haven't even excavated
the whole tomb," Mechem said.
Several members of the tour group said the $1,399 trip was worth
every penny.
The trip also had a business-related aspect, visiting various economic
zones, factories, a tea farm and a silk plant.
The tour was coordinated by the local chamber in conjunction with
chamber member Citslinc Inc. and the Chinese government.
This was the Porterville chamber's second annual business tour
of China.
